My Story

A former college athlete, Adam Torrisi coached at the college level for 10 years before his perspective on life and sports changed drastically as the result of personal tragedy.  This experience left Adam wondering how he could help athletes uncover the most important priorities to find success, while avoiding the common pitfalls that derail so many.  In constructing a framework for success on and off the field, and applying it to his own experience, the idea behind “The Intentional Athlete” was born.

After coaching for 8 more years at the high school and club lacrosse level, Adam became a certified therapist in New Jersey.  He is currently a therapist at Montclair Behavioral Health and Wellness, a private practice in Montclair, New Jersey.

Adam presents to various groups on topics that impact athletes on and off the field. In addition to “The Intentional Athlete,” Adam’s presentations include accessing one’s belief system to uncover the involuntary limitations we place on ourselves.  He also presents to coaches and parents, helping to provide clear expectations for group dynamics, and to discover how adults can best support the student-athletes in their network.

As a men’s lacrosse coach at Montclair State University, Adam went to three straight NCAA Tournaments (2009 - 2011) as a result of winning three straight conference championships.  Additionally, the program won three straight ECAC Championships (2003 - 2005) during his tenure.  Adam mentored several college athletes named to the USILA All-American Team, the USILA North-South All-Star Game, and countless players named to the All-Conference Team.

Adam holds a Master’s of Social Work from the University of Central Florida, and a Master’s of Educational Administration from the University of Scranton.  Besides presenting to various groups of athletes and serving as a therapist, Adam has also been a school administrator since 2013.  Adam resides in Glen Ridge, New Jersey with his wife Andrea and their three children.
